National Volunteer Week

This week is National Volunteer Week, and at The Insurance Connection, we have several staff members who make time to volunteer for organizations and causes that they feel passionate about.

For some time, Lori has been volunteering for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), and is about to take another case.  CASA volunteers are extensively trained, then assigned to cases in which children are removed from their homes due to abuse and/or neglect and placed into foster care.  Volunteers visit the child (or children) at least twice a month and also get to know the child by talking with everyone in that child's life: parents and relatives, foster parents, teachers, medical professionals, attorneys, social workers and others. They use the information they gather to inform judges and others of what the child needs and what will be the best permanent home for them. Of CASA, Lori says, "They are an absolutely wonderful organization!"

Brenda has been a mentor in the Lutheran Social Services (LSS) Mentor program for four years.
Brenda says that they are always looking for more mentors and that the program has really boomed in the years that she has spent mentoring. "It is wonderful getting to the school where you mentor and all rooms are full with kids and their mentors!" Brenda says. "Relationship building in the making!"  Brenda also teaches at Peace Lutheran Church's preschool and assists with the Vacation Bible School each summer.  In years past, she has coached 3rd and 4th grade girls in the Big Sioux Youth Basketball League, which is an all-volunteer organization.

Once a month, Rochelle organizes a senior activity night through Faith Family Church at Good Samaritan Hearthstone Assisted Living and Primrose Assisted Living Facility. Rochelle greatly enjoys the time she spends volunteering!

After her family adopted two kittens from All Cats Rescue, Mel decided that she wanted to help the organization, sharing their belief that all cats deserve to be loved and cared for, regardless of age or medical conditions. Mel designed a new website for the rescue and has been handling updates of the site as well helping to update ACR's social media and listings. She also photographs the cats and kittens for their online listings, which, at times, can be quite challenging, but it is a wonderful feeling to play a part in finding forever homes for them.

If you would like to volunteer, but are unsure of what opportunities are available, please contact The Helpline Center, or dial 211!
